Problem wiht merge replication using pull subscription across internet

Hi,
I want to use merge replication will pull subscription across
internet.
I have 2 computers with SQL Server 2005.
Computer A is the main computer that will have the publication.
Computer B will have a subscription to the Computer A publication.
The distributor will be in Computer B.
Computer A is behind a firewall. The firewall has the following rules
for incoming traffic:
everything denied for all IPs except for the following ports:
20 TCP
21 TCP
22 TCP
23 TCP
25 TCP
53 TCP, UDP
80 TCP
81 TCP
110 TCP
143 TCP
443 TCP
444 TCP
554 TCP
1433 TCP
1755 TCP,UDP
3306 TCP
3389 TCP
5432 TCP
5005 UDP
5800 TCP
5900 TCP
8443 TCP
10000 TCP
25112 TCP
And the following rules for outgoing traffic:
everything denied for all IPs except for the following ports:
20 TCP
21 TCP
22 TCP
23 TCP
25 TCP
53 TCP,UDP
80 TCP
110 TCP
123 UDP
143 TCP
443 TCP
1433 TCP
3306 TCP
5432 TCP
Before trying to set up replication I tried to connect from SSMS from
computer B to A and it worked.
However, trying to connect from SSMS in computer A to computer B
didn't worked.
If I try to connect from another computer (that is not behind the
firewall) to computer B it works.
My question is what outgoing ports need to be opened in the firewall
that protects computer A in order to connect to the SQL Server
instance in computer B?
Will I need to modify my firewall setup if I used push subscription
instead of pull subscription?
Thanks
You would need to open port 1433 for outbound to connect to server b. For a
push server A would connect to its own snapshot share, so this should work
over part 1433 as well.
I would recommend using pull however.

|||Hilary,
I had the port 1433 open for outbound connections in server A but it
wasn't working. I was using a named instance in server B with dynamic
ports so after setting the server B to use the port 1433 I can connect
from server A to server B.
Now I'm trying to configure the merge replication (fingers crossed).
Thanks for the help,
Manu

Problem using SQL 2005 Reporting Services & asp.net app

I'm using VS 2005, SQL 2005 reporting services.
SQL reporting services is working, and I have it both on my local
computer, as well as on a server.
I've created a report in the SQL Business Intelligence development
studio that works in that environment.
I've uploaded the same report to both the Reporting services on my local
computer as well as the server, and can log in to them and run the
report there.
In VS 2005, in a test application that otherwise functions, I brought in
a Reportviewer from the toolbar, and added the report to it.
The reportServerUrl is:
http://mylocalcomputer/reports$sql2005
(I have both sql 2000 and sql 2005 on this local box).
The report path is:
J4 Report/J4 Detail Report
When I try to run it, I get:
The attempt to connect to the report server failed. Check your
connection information and that the report server is a compatible version.
The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found.
When I change the server name to the other one, I get the same message.
However, when I go into SQL Server Reporting services, to this link:
http://myserver/Reports$SQL2005/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=%2fJ4+reports%2fJ4+Detail+Report
The report displays fine.
When I go to my local computer & sql reporting services, to this link:
http://mylocalcomputer/Reports$SQL2005/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=%2fJ4+Reports%2fJ4+Detail+Report
I'm not using Localhost either in the VS 2005 app (in the properties for
the report viewer), but I am calling it (the web app itself where I'm
trying to call the report viewer from) thru localhost there.
http://localhost:2228/testjob/default.aspx
I'm calling other things (not report viewers) on this page that appear
to work.
I've seen some notes regarding this error, and that there is a lot of
registry hacks and config file updates you have to make for it, but not
sure if that's a true fix for the problem.
Anyone have any idea why SQL Reporting Services displays it fine, and
the report viewer - which is supposedly calling the same thing, doesn't?

This might be a long shot, but you should check to see if the the
virtual directories (ReportServer and Reports) in IIS are set to the
correct .NET Framework (.NET 2.0) [via: right-click My Computer ->
select Manage -> Services and Applications -> Internet Information
Services -> Web Sites -> Default Web Site -> right-click the Reports/
ReportServer virtual directories -> select Properties -> select the
ASP.NET tab and verify that the ASP.NET version is 2.0.50727]. Hope
this helps.

This appeared to work, although I had to put in a slash at the end of
the http://mylocalcomputer/ReportServer$sql2005 line.
However, now that I've gotten it to run, I have some unusual behavior -
The "e" on Internet explorer at the top of the tab now flickers, like
the page is reloading. It also runs the CPU up to 100% on the computer
and although I can go from tab to tab in it (I am using AJAX tab panels
in the page), it will take like up to a minute to go to the next tab.
I'm not doing anything really data-intensive on those tabs, and they had
been functioning fine prior to putting in the report viewer (i.e. they
weren't flickering & clocking the CPU).
I eventually have to kill the page to do anything, because it has the
system up to 100%.
Any idea why reportviewer might make this act this way?
Thanks for the help,
BC

Problem Using Copy Database Wizard in SSMS

I am having a problem copying a database on a server back to the same server
from a remote computer using SSMS. I have 2 remote computers (WinXP) running
SSMS on the same domain as the server. I log in as an administrative user on
both, but can only run the Copy Database Wizard successfully from one of the
remote computers.
On the computer that fails, it does so at the Create Package step and
returns an error message saying "No description found". Anyone have an idea
how I should begin troubleshooting this problem? I can not find anything in
the event logs on the remote system or server that sheds a clue, or in the
SQL server logs.

That's not an error that I've seen. Which method are you trying to use?
Direct copy of the files, or the SMO method?
There is a CTP of SP2 out, and Microsoft claims that there are a lot of
fixes to the Copy Database Wizard. I have not tested it myself, though,
yet. I don't really want to recommend you to install beta software, but
if you are desperate you can try it.
However, there plenty of other ways of achieving what the wizard does,
so you may want to explore those options instead.
